The Mego Corporation tried it's hand on real life characters with this very authentic looking American West line. The line included characters such as Sitting Bull, Buffalo Bill Cody, Davey Crockett, Wyatt Earp, Cochise and Wild Bill Hickok. A boxed battery operated Super Horse dubbed Shadow was also released whihc complimented the line beautifully.
Figures were available in numerous packaging variations with the first being released on a Kresge style blister. Shortly after the figures were then sold in solid boxed packaging which featured artwork by Grey Morrow. A German boxed two pack was also released and an image of that item will be added to this gallery very soon. A closer look at the box will show his signed autograph but beware, a very close inspection is needed to see this which has been overlooked by the Mego collecting community for years. These figures were later released on Lion Rock cards and can be found on the secondary market quite easily these days.
According to author John Bonavita a rumored Dodge City playset was featured in their catalog but was unfortunately never produced. The one thing that this line lacks is a detailed playset so Dodge City would have been met by fans and collectors with open arms.
The figures themselves sported colorful costumes and many accessories that were easily lost which makes obtaining complete loose specimens quite the challenge.
All in all the American West line withstood the tests of time as they are still actively sought out by todays collector on the secondary market. No Mego collection would be complete without them! |
